East-west German unity
Today is the 20 year anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Heads of government from all over the world, including US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, have gathered in Berlin to commemorate this momentous occasion.
It is indeed a day for celebration, but let us not forget that atleast 140 people died at the hands of former East German border troops, simply for choosing freedom. My mother was one of the lucky ones.

Today certainly commemorates a momentous occasion. Hard to believe it's been 20 years already. I'm sending thoughts to the families of those who died but also those who celebrate freedom!
ReplyDeleteWow! 20 years and I can still remember seeing it on the evening news. I am so glad your mom was one of the lucky ones.
ReplyDeleteI heard that U2 did a surprise concert in honor of the momentous occasion one day last week. Of course, only so many people could fit into the venue holding the concert, so some were really disappointed to miss it. Then, the residents/tourists were shocked to see U2 erecting a huge screen outside so everyone could be a part of the celebration. I thought that was way cool.
ReplyDeleteI know I cheated (because you're not a "new" friend, but shhhh! Please don't tell or they might take it away...and we all know I need all the help I can get!) but you have an award awaiting you on my blog. You probably already have it - and there are very few things you actually need two of. (Hands and feet topping the list - unless you're a mom. Then you need 9 of everything!)
Please stop by and pick it up if you would like. You inspire me! xx

THANK YOU for the comment
These kind of events should never be forgotten. We should always remember that we owe the freedom that we have from the people who sacrificed even their own life.
