This is not specifically a Valentine's Day post. It just so happens that after weeks of drabness and non-stop rain I needed to cheer myself up with a new outfit #handmadefashion. I designed a tunic/minidress with one of my favorite knit fabrics featuring tiny arrows. I embellished the front with a big red heart. I love how it turned out = instant happiness. The previous week I had purchased the most adorable tiny red heart mug. I like that the hearts match my nail polish. I'm detail oriented like that :)
Taking pictures outdoors in winter is always a bit of a challenge where I live. Either it rains or we get sleet, hail and sometimes a hurricane. On this particular day it was super windy, hence the wild hair. I was worried about my lens not being able to focus properly, so I chose a really fast shutter speed. This works, but normally I'd prefer the more skin flattering portrait mode :)
♥
I don't know about you, but whenever I switch on the radio or watch the news these days I'm bombarded by distressing stories. Most of it is sensationalist rubbish, but I do understand that it's easy to get sucked in to that negative vortex, especially if colleagues, neighbors, the taxi driver, the cashier and the news agent keep rehashing the stories. Negativity has never done anyone any good. The trick is to be aware of your thoughts and stop them in their tracks. Don't get me wrong, I'm not immune to dark thoughts, particularly on a day when another case of serious animal abuse crosses my desk. If you follow me on Twitter you may have come across some of my more outspoken tweets! But to carry around negative feelings, be it anger, fear, resentfulness or hatred for days or weeks on end only results in sparking those same feelings in everyone else and risking a stomach ulcer. No thanks. I refuse to be part of a collective, negative mindset as I'm sure many of my readers do too, but might unknowingly be sucked in none the less. The first step in the right direction is to become aware of your negative thoughts and consciously create new, helpful thought patterns. This does take patience and practice, especially in adverse situations. But that's the point and nobody said it would be easy. Keep at it! Over time you will noticeably feel better, become more energized, motivated and life affirming, regardless of the various dramas unfolding around you. And this in turn will have a positive effect on everyone you come into contact with. It's a win-win :)
The point of this post is a gentle reminder for us to live a heart-based life, starting with a little prayer of gratitude each morning and before bedtime. We, as humans, are meant to be kind, compassionate and loving, but it's our ego that often gets in the way. It helps to be less critical of others and oneself. To be unbiased and to move away from reaction towards helpful action. Take good care of your mind and remember to be gentle and forgiving to yourself too!
♥
Let's spread the message of love today and everyday...

Love this post! To me it seems perfect for Valentine's Day! Love the heart cup, so cute! and love your new tunic, so neat! In today's word being kind &compassionate and thoughtful are most needed, and not to forget being thankful for what you have!
ReplyDeleteFirst off, I love the tunic and it looks great on you. Second, this is a pretty awesome post. Great reminder and all so true. I've been working on letting go of the negative and although it doesn't change my surroundings and the people I have noticed the change in me.
ReplyDeleteHallo liebe Duni,
I love your handmade tunic! So cute with skinny jeans and boots!
ReplyDeleteWe completely avoid the news around here. It might not be the best way to live, but it keeps that negativity out of our house.
Alles Liebe
ANi
What a perfect post, first of all, I love the tunic and the 'you are so loved' postcard. Did you receive that one, or will you send it out?
ReplyDeleteBeing compassionate is such an important thing. I try to live by the motto of treating people the way you like to be treated yourself.
I love your heart tunic! Wonderful post today Duni and a great reminder for all of us. Negativity is so pervasive these days and people seem to spew it without thinking. It's really sad but since we can only control ourselves, I try to keep it as far away from my thoughts as I can. Life is too short to harbor negativity!
ReplyDeleteYour tunic is FANTASTIC!!!! Yes, I stay away from news channels. If it's important, I will find out about and tune in to a non-sensational channel.
ReplyDeleteSuch a lovely post! <3
It's funny, I've been thinking a lot of the same thoughts about ego and compassion. And trying to move forward with less judgement. Your mini-dress is adorable and looks beautiful on you :D
ReplyDeleteLovely! Nice craftsmanship :) Essie nail polishes are great, aren't they?
ReplyDeleteI totally agree and that's why most of the time I try to avoid newspapers, television news programs, negative gossip etc. It can be hard to steer clear of at times though. Keep up the positivity and creativity x
Beautiful post Duni! That daily news drives me crazy since it seems to be 90% negative. I haven't watched the news though since we moved because we don't have our living room set up yet. I normally would watch it while eating lunch. Ignorance is bliss but on the other hand it is important to know what is going on in the world. I need to work on reducing those frustrating thoughts when paying attention! On a happy note, I just adore your mug and how it matches your nail polish. :)
deine Rosy ♥
